Efforts to make Addis Ababa free from tobacco smoke continue in Yeka Sub-city. Based on this, the food and drug branch office of the district is working on mobilization and awareness activities by involving various stakeholders, youth and security forces.
The movement "Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction" is based on the international leader's idea of "Let's expose the strategies that are harmful to nicotine and tobacco addiction!", and it is set to focus on uncovering and exposing the adaptation strategies that tobacco and nicotine manufacturers create especially for young people.
In particular, awareness programs conducted in educational institutions, youth centers and public entertainment areas have been strengthened and messages are being given widely to help young people protect themselves from addiction and maintain their health.
The general manager of the branch office, Ato Fantahun, stated that "Tobacco and nicotine are very harmful to the public's health, especially since they are methods used to lure young people into addiction by approaching them in an attractive manner. In the direction of 'Unmasking the Appeal', intensive work is being done to clearly expose these methods and provide accurate information to the public.
He stated that the authority will continue to work with the community and stakeholders to strengthen its efforts to create a tobacco-free environment. Moreover, he called on the youth to protect themselves from addiction and to be active participants in the illegal tobacco trade and use, as well as the society to actively participate in this sector.
