The Food and Drug Authority of Addis Ababa City held a joint discussion with pharmacies and health institutions on the results of the Gap Assessment conducted on health and drug institutions in the 2018/19 budget year. In the assessment, 41 health institutions and 44 drug institutions, a total of 85 institutions, were accessed, and the highest score recorded was 97 percent and the lowest was 49.6 percent.
The main purpose of the Gap Assessment is to identify the gaps in institutions, to reach standards, to create model institutions, and to enable the community to receive safe and quality health services. The assessment also identified gaps in drug handling and storage, document management, lack of expertise, SOP implementation, and infection prevention systems in some institutions.
The Head of the Regulatory Sector of the Addis Ababa City Food and Drug Authority, Ato Enga Ereketa, who attended the forum, said that institutions should not possess illegal drugs, not sell drugs without a doctor’s prescription, not work beyond their authorized service level, maintain professional ethics, renew their licenses on time, and provide all their services in accordance with national standards.
Finally, the branch office conducted an evaluation of the 2018 budget plan performance and a recognition and award program for health and pharmaceutical institutions that achieved excellent performance during the budget year and implemented standards appropriately.
