The Kirkos Sub-City Food and Drug Authority announced that it has taken action to remove a number of expired medicines and food products from the market that could pose a serious threat to the health of the community.

In this large-scale control and removal campaign, a total of over 8.5 million birr worth of medical supplies, medicines and various types of food were removed. This was stated to be a control operation that saved the community in the sub-city from a health crisis and unnecessary economic waste.

According to information obtained from the branch office’s Sub-City Communication Office News Department, during the control campaign, more than two thousand kilograms of unusable medicines were collected during the inspection conducted mainly to ensure the quality and safety of medicines.

It was also reported that these expired medicines were found in government health centers and private pharmacies and similar medical institutions under the city.

The total estimated value of the medicines was stated to be eight million five hundred forty nine thousand three hundred fifty four birr, and the products were disposed of according to the established disposal system.

In addition to the medicines, strict monitoring was carried out targeting the daily food consumption and safety of the public. Accordingly, approximately seven thousand kilograms of spoiled and expired food products found being sold in various commercial establishments and supermarkets were seized and disposed of.

Similarly, more than seven hundred and eighty liters of various drinks, soft drinks and bottled water were disposed of, and the total value of these foods and drinks was stated to be over one million one hundred thousand birr.

The office announced that during the same control campaign, the slaughter of three bulls that was carried out illegally and without health inspection certification was seized. It was also stated that this illegal meat, valued at three hundred thousand birr and not meeting the standards, was immediately removed to prevent it from spreading to the community and causing health problems.

This kind of coordinated control action will ensure that commercial and health institutions in the city operate responsibly, and in the future, it was stated that the monitoring will continue to be strengthened to protect the community from expired and unsafely prepared food and beverage products.
