The Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority is working on numerous initiatives in collaboration with the Council of Iddirs to make Addis Ababa smoke-free.
Under the theme "Expose the tactics that expose us to nicotine and tobacco addiction!", the Authority is engaging various community structures to celebrate World No Tobacco Day. It emphasizes that every level of society must play its part in protecting the public from the dangers of tobacco smoke.
Leaders of the Authority indicated that since members of the Council of Iddirs hold significant influence and respect within the community, they should play a vital role in saving the next generation from tobacco smoke. They are encouraged to take ownership of the regulatory efforts by educating their neighborhoods, creating awareness, and providing tips/reporting violations.
Furthermore, they underscored in their strategic direction that Council of Iddir members must work focus on creating model villages. They are expected to take ownership of monitoring "block structures" in their respective areas regarding tobacco control, illegal animal slaughter, and the safety of packaged food and beverage products exposed to sunlight, thereby preventing such illegal activities.
