The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority has been awarded a certificate of recognition for its outstanding efforts to prevent undue interference from the tobacco industry.

January/2018Addis Ababa

Ethiopia has been recognized for its strong work to prevent undue interference from the tobacco industry, and the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority has been recognized for its significant contribution to this.

A forum was held to announce the results of the Ethiopian Tobacco Industry Interference Index 2025 study. The State Minister of Health of Ethiopia, Honorable Dr. Dereje Duguma, said that excellent results have been recorded in the regulatory work carried out by the government in coordination with various bodies over the past years.

The Minister, who pointed out that the tobacco industry’s interference in our country is manifested in various ways, including policy implementation, congratulated the country for being a model country in Africa and internationally in terms of its resistance to interference, and stressed that it should work diligently to maintain its results.

Heran Gerba, Director General of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority, who pointed out that tobacco industry interference is one of the serious threats that undermine effective tobacco control, said that despite strong policies, the industry continues to try to influence decision-making and undermine public health protection through direct and indirect means.

He said that the national recognition for the work done in preventing tobacco industry interference is the result of the government’s determined stance and actions, as well as the strong coordination with stakeholders.

Our country received the recognition at the World Health Organization (WHO) meeting held in Geneva, and the recognition was granted by an international humanitarian organization called Good Governance for Tobacco Control.

Following this, the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority was awarded a certificate of recognition for its great efforts to prevent tobacco industry interference.
