The Kolfe Branch Office of the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority announced that, acting on a tip-off from the public and in collaboration with various entities, it disposed of 69 quintals of chili pepper heavily contaminated with aflatoxin. The operation took place in the Kolfe Keranio Sub-city, Woreda 07 area.
Ms. Munira Negash, Manager of the Kolfe Food and Medicine Branch Office, stated that the chili pepper—intended for human consumption and valued at over 6 million Birr—posed a potential health risk to the public. She explained that the disposal was carried out in coordination with stakeholders, including peace and security bodies, the police, regulatory enforcement units, and the Kolfe Woreda 07 administration.
Ms. Munira further noted that laboratory testing of the prepared chili pepper product confirmed high levels of aflatoxin contamination. She added that the individual responsible for the matter is currently facing legal action. Noting that the confiscated chili pepper would have caused various health problems had it reached the public, the authorities urged consumers to safeguard their health by purchasing only products with verified quality and safety. They also called upon the public to strengthen their cooperation by reporting such illegal activities to help prevent them.
