The Addis Ababa City Administration Food and Drug Authority announced that health professionals who do not renew their professional licenses on time for various reasons will have to pay a penalty fee in addition to the service fee starting from the 31st day of the expiration of their service period.

The authority’s Information Communication Technology Directorate, Ato Mebratu Getahun, indicated that the online service for renewing professional licenses for health professionals is being provided. He explained that the software system calculates the service fee and penalty fee for renewing health professionals whose professional licenses have expired from the date of expiration of their service period and saves the amount of the penalty.

Ato Mebratu added that professionals who have not renewed their professional license for 31 to 60 days will be fined 600 birr including a service fee of 200 birr, from 61 to 90 days, 1200 birr including a service fee, from 91 to 120 days, 1800 birr including a service fee, from 121 to 150 days, 2400 birr including a service fee, and from 151 to 180 days, 3000 birr including a service fee.

He also explained that health professionals who have not renewed their professional license for up to 8 years will be fined 4800 birr including a service fee, from 8 to 11 years, 5400 birr, and from 11 to 15 years, 7200 birr including a service fee. He also explained that this calculation is automatically entered when filling out the online form.

Finally, Ato Mebratu reminded health professionals to renew their licenses on time, realizing that the penalties increase as the license renewal period is extended.
