The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority, working with the Federal Food and Drug Authority and various civic organizations, has been said to be a model for Africa beyond the country and the changes that are being seen are an indication of the constant changes.
The authority held a joint discussion with the Federal Food and Drug Authority, the Permanent Community Development Organization, the Mathews Wondu Foundation, and the Health Development and Anti-Malaria Association regarding the tobacco control coordination work and awareness-raising activities carried out on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day today.
The General Manager of the Sustainable Community Development Organization, Ato Elias Kalayu, said that our organization’s work to prevent cancer and protect the health of the community, including our partnership with the government on the Tobacco Control Initiative and the multifaceted work we are doing with the authority, as well as the historical changes being recorded, are a sign that Addis Ababa is becoming a model city in Africa in terms of its goals.
Ato Elias added that the organization has brought a document showing the work plan and expected results of the work it is working on with the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority to further strengthen this change. The document has also been presented.
According to the presented document, the participants expressed their commitment to continue the change and create a model city to protect citizens from non-communicable diseases and to protect the community.
Finally, the Deputy Director of the Authority's Regulatory Sector, Ato Enga Ereketa, explained that as a whole, our regulatory work is recording tangible changes and that the cooperation of the community is indispensable for carrying out extensive work. Ato Enga added that since the tobacco issue is a policy that supports the prevention of public health, awareness creation activities will be widely carried out, and action and law enforcement will be taken against uneducated and greedy traders, and that we are actively working on the work done and the changes that are being seen. Finally, he stressed that the role of civil society organizations and stakeholders should be strengthened to work sustainably and effectively with tobacco.
