Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority Food and Health Control Directorate is one of the activities carried out to protect public health in the city. Among the activities carried out in this sector, creating tobacco-free environments plays a major role in protecting public health from harmful effects.
Tobacco use is known to be one of the major health risks worldwide. Among these, heart disease, cancer, respiratory problems and other serious diseases are associated with tobacco smoke, and non-smokers can also face health risks due to second-hand smoke.

Therefore, the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority will implement the tobacco control guidelines stipulated by law to prevent smoking in public places, offices, hotels and similar service areas, which will help protect the public from the dangers of second-hand tobacco smoke and create a healthy living environment.
The director of the sector, Ato Estefanos Getachew, said that law enforcement agencies, health institutions and the public themselves should work together in this task. He said that raising public awareness of the harms of tobacco, respecting the law and creating tobacco-free environments will create a healthy future for the youth and the community.
