The Akaki-Kaliti branch office of the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority—noting that robust inspection and monitoring are crucial for protecting public health and safety—reported that it conducted effective inspection and monitoring activities during the first quarter of the 2019 fiscal year.
The head of the branch office, Mr. Dems Gebrewold, stated that in addition to routine inspections, the office enhanced its regulatory operations by implementing risk-based inspection systems and self-regulation (empowerment) frameworks.
He further disclosed that, as a result of the inspection and monitoring activities carried out during the quarter, food and medicinal products—estimated to be worth over 2 million [Birr]—that were either expired or hazardous to health were removed from the market. Furthermore, Mr. Dems noted that effective work has been accomplished by strengthening health inspection forums—with the participation of various stakeholders—to ensure the community takes ownership of regulatory activities and participates actively in the process.
He pointed out that food and *injera* (flatbread) establishments operating without obtaining certificates of competence or meeting required standards pose a challenge to regulatory efforts. He stated that focused work will be undertaken to bring these establishments up to the expected standards, ensuring they provide quality and safe services.
Additionally, he outlined the branch office's future priorities, which include: conducting risk-based inspections of food and beverage products exposed to sunlight, as well as juice bars and butcher shops; implementing the legal framework for tobacco smoke control; and carrying out rigorous inspection and monitoring of childcare centers, student meal services, *injera* and bread production facilities, and massage parlors. He urged the public to play their part to ensure the effectiveness of these efforts.
