Creating a healthy society is a crucial prerequisite for the overall prosperity of a country. It is known that our country's health policy, which focuses on preventive health care in line with the great idea of ​​our people to prevent disease before it spreads, places great emphasis on disease prevention and early control of disease-causing activities. Since Addis Ababa is the seat of national, regional and international organizations and a city with a large flow of foreign tourists, and since it is inevitable to establish and implement a health control system that can meet this requirement, the Addis Ababa City Administration Food, Medicine, Health Care Administration and Control Authority was established by Proclamation 30/2014 and is fulfilling this task and responsibility. With the effective control system and implementation, it has been possible to contain the epidemics and infectious diseases that could have spread to epidemics in our city without causing as much damage as they could have on the health, social interaction and economy of our society. The results achieved by our health professionals and our society in controlling the outbreaks of diarrhea and COVID-19 that occurred in our city in the past years are a clear demonstration. While the work done so far and the good results achieved in thwarting the epidemics that caused great devastation in our society have been maintained, the problems that are being observed in terms of the legality, quality and public safety of food, medicine and food and medicine resources, including those of international origin, are multifaceted, complex, variable in nature and have a long chain involving many parties, as evidenced by the findings of regulatory bodies and legal bodies and studies conducted by various bodies. Therefore, I would like to assure you that we will pay great attention to professional and structural capacity building, understanding that it is essential to build a health control structure and professionals equipped with professional qualifications, professional discipline and modern technology that is appropriate to the international position of the city and the complexity and scope of the problem, taking as a starting point the effective activities we have carried out in the past years under the leadership and professional efforts of our Authority, with the support of stakeholders and, most importantly, with the participation of our people. Another area that the Authority is focusing on is the implementation of the Tobacco Control Proclamation, by formulating a city-wide initiative to make Addis Ababa free from tobacco smoke, and conducting a coordinated public mobilization and control for its implementation. Accordingly, through our public awareness campaigns and strong regulatory efforts in cities, sub-cities and woredas, we have seen a broad understanding of change among both business establishments and the community. We must continue to strengthen this work and continue to work with the goal of increasing the number of smoke-free business establishments, public entertainment venues and centers, and areas by 2015. In general, I call on the Addis Ababa City Administration Food, Drug, and Health Care Administration Regulatory Authority to prevent and expose illegal drug distribution, illegal food production and sale, immoral acts committed in violation of professional ethics, and the government program to make Addis Ababa smoke-free, and to fulfill our responsibility to protect the health of our community by preventing and exposing illegality.
