The Kolfe Branch Office of the Food and Medicine Authority is working to establish model public childcare centers, schools, and school-feeding facilities.

In collaboration with the sub-city’s Education Office, the Kolfe Branch Office of the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority is implementing a 90-day plan focused on creating exemplary, model institutions. This initiative targets 30 schools, 22 school-feeding programs, and 45 public childcare centers.

Munira Negash, Manager of the Branch Office, stated that under this 90-day action plan, efforts are underway to ensure that these 30 schools, 22 school-feeding programs, and 45 public childcare centers provide services in full compliance with established standards. Furthermore, the initiative aims to create model institutions by ensuring that schools remain free from disruptive activities. Senior Officer Munira further noted that the assessment and monitoring conducted at these institutions revealed certain shortcomings—such as the failure to perform quarterly health check-ups for children in school feeding programs, and the use of cramped, single-room facilities for childcare. Conversely, she highlighted positive findings, including schools that have installed water tanks, ensured a 500-meter buffer zone free from disruptive activities, and provided high-quality school feeding services.

Furthermore, she explained that intensive support and monitoring are being implemented to address existing gaps and sustain strengths. This includes providing training to school principals and the staff (mothers) responsible for school feeding programs, empowering them to take action and drive positive change. These efforts are also aimed at establishing exemplary model institutions and ensuring the effective implementation of these standards.
