The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority issued a press release to 12 media outlets on the occasion of the Easter holiday, calling on the public to be aware of the illegal food preparation, drug retailing and distribution, mixing food with foreign substances, and illegal animal slaughtering that are taking place in our city and to take appropriate precautions and to work together with the Authority to prevent illegal activities by providing suggestions even if they occur.
In the statement, the Authority’s Regulatory Sector Deputy General Manager, Ato Enga Erekta, noted that the Authority has carried out extensive regulatory activities on food, health and drug institutions in the past 9 months of the 2018 fiscal year to protect the health of the community, especially through regular, risk-based and campaign controls.
He also explained that tobacco control was carried out on 21,361 food manufacturers, distributors and service providers, 4,105 health-related institutions and 25,485 institutions, and that 1366 health and health professionals, as well as 1,293 drug stores, 1,291 special drug (narcotic) institutions and 85 traditional medicine centers were monitored and controlled.
Ato Enga added that during the control, expired food and medicine that endanger the health of the community and cause harm to health were found, selling medicines without a prescription, the presence of products of unknown origin and providing services without qualification were found.
The authority was able to eliminate substandard food, beverages, medicines and tobacco products worth more than 123 million birr. In addition, he said that various measures have been taken against 1,230 food and health-related institutions, 262 health institutions and pharmacies, and four professionals.
Ato Enga added that the authorities have also worked to protect the public from communicable and non-communicable diseases and bring institutions up to standard through the regulatory activities they have carried out, and he urged the public to continue their participation by reporting illegal activities through 8864 and in person.
Finally, he pointed out that the public should develop the habit of checking the expiration date, quality marks and health warnings when purchasing any product or receiving a service, and conveyed the message that a healthy society can only be created when the government controls, the trader works honestly and the public respects its rights.
