The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority announced that it is strictly monitoring and supervising that bread, bread and other cooked and unwrapped foods should not be sold mixed with other goods and chemicals.
The Authority's Deputy General Manager of Regulatory Sector, Ato Enga Ereketa, explained that the Authority is conducting control and supervision work to create awareness among the public that cooked and unwrapped foods should not be sold mixed with other chemicals in places or shops that are not up to standard and have poor hygiene.
He also stated that the control work will be carried out following a risk-based inspection system due to the lack of experts and the number of institutions. Therefore, the Deputy Director-General mentioned that the bread and bread products sold in stores should not be sold together with other chemicals and materials that are hazardous to health, and that the control work is being carried out in each store, considering their potential risks.
Mr. Enga added that this control work on bread and bread retailing
was based on a suggestion from the community, and that the control system should ensure that the cooked food maintains the food system from transportation to retail and does not harm the health of the community.
He explained that the community itself should be part of the control and should buy bread and bread from licensed bakeries, restaurants, supermarket markets, mini markets and food service outlets that have a separate storage area for themselves.
According to the official, the department is working to raise awareness of this issue through the media and at all levels, and further education and awareness-raising work with relevant parties will be planned and implemented on a large scale, along with strict monitoring.
