In conjunction with the 2019 New Year holiday, the Authority conducted inspections and disposed of spoiled products with an estimated value of 512,234 Birr.

The Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority carried out inspections across 896 traditional food product shops, supermarkets, and bazaar locations in the city in preparation for the 2019 New Year holiday.
The Authority conducted product-focused inspections, covering 728 traditional food shops, 58 supermarkets, and 110 bazaar locations.
Various measures were taken against 158 ​​establishments found to have deficiencies; these included issuing written warnings to 155 establishments, imposing a temporary suspension on one, and fining two others. Ato Estifanos Getachew, the Authority’s Director of Food and Health-Related Institution Inspection, stated that during the inspection, 781 kilograms of spoiled food were confiscated, along with 531 liters of beverages, 29 kilograms/liters of health-related products, 81 miscellaneous items, and 10 packets of various illegal cigarette products.
The Director further noted that the total estimated value of the confiscated products amounts to 512,234 Birr.
He announced that the inspection activities would continue through the Meskel and Irreecha holidays and urged the public to purchase quality, safe products from legal outlets while shopping for the festivities. He particularly advised consumers to check the expiration dates of packaged goods—especially those frequently sold on the street during these public celebrations—before making a purchase.
