The Addis Ababa City Administration Food and Medicine Authority held a joint discussion with its Advisory Council to ensure the Council contributes effectively toward the 15 goals planned for the next 90 days, thereby supporting the successful execution of the plan.
Key activities prioritized within the Authority’s 90-day plan include: removing products from the market that have been compromised by exposure to sunlight; controlling illegal food, health-related, and medicinal products; enabling institutions to establish their own internal control systems; and strengthening laboratory testing operations for food and health-related samples. Furthermore, the plan includes activities such as providing support and monitoring for childcare facilities regarding hygiene and sanitation; overseeing and regulating schools to ensure they remain free from tobacco and drugs; and raising awareness—extending into schools—about the harmful effects of drugs, tobacco, and unauthorized medicines, alongside organizing advocacy forums at various levels.
During the forum, Ms. Tigist Bedada, the Authority’s Director General, emphasized the significant role of the Advisory Council in successfully executing the institution’s 90-day plan and achieving its 15 defined goals. She urged the Council to support the institution’s strategic direction, foster coordination and collaboration, and take responsible ownership of its specific contributions to ensure the plan’s successful implementation.
The Director General further noted that while the activities carried out by the Advisory Council to date are encouraging, there is a need to further strengthen collective cooperation and engagement to fulfill the institution’s objectives and provide better services to the public. It was emphasized that the Advisory Council should actively participate, support the institution’s efforts, and collaborate on necessary matters to ensure that the activities included in the plan—such as oversight, monitoring, and awareness-raising—achieve their intended outcomes and bring about the expected changes.
A consensus was reached during the forum that the Advisory Council will play its part in the successful execution of the plan by working in coordination with the Authority to strengthen the institution’s operational capacity, achieve the goals identified in the 90-day plan, and enhance the effectiveness of services provided to the public.
